WEST SIDE CHRISTIAN PRE-SCHOOL and KINDERGARTEN Preschool Hours 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. Kindergarten Hours 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Extended Day Hours 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. West Side Christian Church Preschool has been operating as a non-profit organization since 1975. We provide early childhood programs for children between the ages of 2 ½ through 5 years of age. Our program is a license-exempt religious organization certified through the Department of Social Services. Each program is developed to be age and developmentally appropriate. We believe that learning through guided play helps children develop a love for learning. Socialization skills are taught through modeling and application. We are using a variety of resources for our curriculum, such as, Creative Teacher Press, Pre-School by Stormie, Scholastic and Mailbox publications. Through these and an accumulation of resources, we prepare children to begin their school years. Our four-year-old program, three and five day, focuses on reaching goals that help children succeed in kindergarten. Using theme based sessions, we teach children to recognize their names and begin writing skills. The children also learn the alphabet, numbers, colors, and shapes. They learn phonemic awareness through rhymes and poetry. Daily reading and weekly reader materials help children learn left to right reading sequence, as well as, top to bottom. Children do art activities each day related to the theme. Through outside play, block and legos, and manipulatives, children develop large and small motor skills. We expose children to history, science, math, and multicultural concepts. Our five day program will also include Spanish, sign language, and technology skills. The religious training for our school is inclusive Christian behavior. Our teachers model Christian behaviors and respect for all of God’s creation. Christian holidays are recognized and celebrated in every classroom. The children in our four-year-old and Kindergarten classes attend chapel twice a month where they learn about God’s love.
The 2009-2010 school year, we will be offering our third year of
Kindergarten. Class hours are 9 to 1:30 p.m. Our curriculum is aligned with the
Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). We will be using Harcourt Trophies series
